“I would love to tell you a bit about how I got into the encaustic medium and what it means to my photography.

During the last year I’ve been experimenting with encaustic wax as a way to enhance the painterly, impressionistic quality of some of my photographs. I had become tired of computer processing digital images and wanted a way to return to a more hands-on, unique way to create with my photography. Encaustic wax gives each photo a more dreamy, moody feel and creates a one-of-a-kind final product, since texture, oil color and three dimensional objects can be combined with the images with ease. I start with images that complement the technique, having a more “painterly” quality, then after applying several coats of fused wax, add texture and color to enhance those qualities.

It’s given my work a new direction and a welcome departure from the purely digital. Each piece evolves organically and this technique takes me back to my roots as a painter and is very gratifying to me, giving older images new life and reviving my interest in photography, which, to my surprise, has waned over the last couple of years. Making single images in the “real” world has re-energized me, and I do love the process and the results. I’ve attached a few images for your review. I must add that photographing these is a challenge, and they do always look “better” when viewed in person.
