Rfotofolio is pleased to feature the work of Michael Jantzen.
Would you please tell us a little about yourself?
I am an artist/designer whose work is well-known around the world because it has been featured in the media. Most of my work merges art, architecture, technology, and sustainable design.
Some of my work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern art in New York.
Photography is also an art form that I often use either as a specific art expression, and/or as a way to document my other work.
How did you get started photography?
I started using photography to document my other art and or design work, and soon saw the potential of the media as an art form of its own.
Which photographers and other artist work do admire?
Ellen Jantzen, my wife and Anish Kapoor the Sculptor.
And what about their work inspires you?
In both cases, they strive to invent new art and not follow others.
When did you start to develop a personal style?
I have been working for nearly 45 years as an artist/ designer and from the beginning I have tried to establish and maintain a personal style that is based on invention and not convention.

If no one saw your work, would you still create it?
Maybe not as much, but yes I would continue because I continually learn about the world around me through my work. I am also very much entertained by doing my work and get great joy from seeing what I (whomever that is) am going to be doing next!
Please tell us about your process and what the perfect day of photography is for you.
I rarely spend a whole day making photos. Photography for me is one just one part of my creative process.
What challenges do you face as a photographer?
Always looking for new creative challenges, but the biggest challenge is how to make a living doing this work.
With the rapid changes in how people make and view a photograph, how do you view this time in the history of photography?
I see it as a very exciting time in which to reinvent the whole idea of photography. What photography can be.
How do you over come a creative block?
I usually go for a long walk, works every time.
How does your art affect the way you see the world?
I use my art as a window through which I see the world around me in a new way.
My art helps me look at everything in a way that expands the world and makes it more interesting.
Is there another type of photography or subject matter you would like to tackle?
Most of my photography is very different from the images you have shown. Most of it is much more experimental and conceptual, much more about reinventing the idea of photography. This is the kind of photography that I enjoy most.
